Things that make me scream...

Today I got an email from a recruiter.

“First of all, if you're receiving this email in error, I apologize.”

(No need for apology, but yes, you got the wrong person.)

“Either way, if you know of anyone searching for work over the holidays, please feel free to refer them to me.”

(Given what you’re offering, I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.)

“We have a large document review project … starting this Monday….Yes, the week before Christmas!”

(Tis the season to be jolly.)

“This project requires actively licensed attorneys to work for a minimum of 2 to 3 weeks at $25/hour.”

(Or you could work as a manager at the mall without a college degree for about the same after the mall job kicks in health insurance. This is offensive...not to mention that when people take these jobs, it actually can *hurt* their career based on the bizarre outlook of certain employers. Seems to me you should be paying a premium for that.)

“Vacation requests will be considered given the holidays.”

(Wow, that’s SO kind of you...because people with post-baccalaureate training should consider themselves lucky to work twelve hour days over Xmas and New Years for a crummy wage.)

“HOURS: The facility will be open from 7am to 7pm seven days a week. You must be able to work a minimum of 40 hours. There will be NO cap on the number of hours you can work and weekend work will be encouraged.”

(Sounds like a place where people are really valued. You know, the kind of place where I'd want to work my butt off in the hope of securing something full-time.  Not.)

“Overtime will be paid at straight time.”

(THAT is effing baloney and ten times worse given that you are asking people to work over a major holiday. Will the employer also dress up as Ebenezer Scrooge to get everyone in the holiday spirit?)

“If you or anyone you know would be interested, please let me know as soon as possible!”

(If you are interested, contact me, and I will slap a sense of self-esteem into your being.)

Anna,
Long time reader of your posts and first time response.

It is sad time to be attorneys (obviously not in your case) but when I read something like this...

Document review is a paycheck and pays more than retail. You can work a lot of hours and make a decent amount to pay your loans. Some of us have to do that while we search for permanent employment. You can leave it off your resume and continue to search. I am personally grateful for the checks document review gave me before I found something permanent.
