When a hurricane is fast approaching the Gulf Coast, like say in 2008 when Ike came and stole Houston's electricity for a month and blew out half our traffic lights, did y'all start getting bombarded by the news nearly a week ahead of its occurrence? Or do news outlets think that hurricanes which hit the Gulf Coast are no big deal as they only affect cities like Galveston, Houston, New Orleans, and coastal towns in Mississippi?
Just curious, as I can't read any form of national online publication without hearing about Sandy. Maybe it's because a lot of news centers are located on the east coast?

I am a hurricane aficionado. "Accuweather Hurricane" is not only one of my most frequent searches, but also a bookmark.
So, yeah. I - personally - hear about all of them. From the wave-stage all the way through to landfall & aftermath.
Yes, we do hear about all of them.
It seems like national hurricane coverage increased dramatically after Hurricane Katrina if the storm was headed toward an unprepared area. No one cares if it hits Florida or Texas because those people know what to do.
I remember having to dig for information about Ike while I was in Los Angeles and my parent were in the eye in Northeast Houston. Nobody cared on the West Coast so it wasn't on the news. I remember being at college in Oregon when Rita hit. My friends were highly annoyed that my Houston based cell number didn't work and didn't understand why.
I am over the Sandy hype and the storm hasn't even hit yet. I know it is going to be bad and the East Coast is not built for storms of this magnitude and God help them if an earthquake of reasonable strength were to hit. I think that side of the country might just implode on itself.

Wow. Just wow.
I think it's a combo of most-densely-populated area of the country and the rareness of an actual hurricane making it to there. But yes, we hear about all of the storms in the gulf too.
